Mountain Lakes Education Foundation awards grants; board honors student achievements

The Mountain Lakes Board of Education meeting on June 1 featured student recognitions across arts, music and theater and a grant report from the Mountain Lakes Education Foundation (MLEF).
Jennifer DePompayo, MLEF president, said the foundation reviewed about $136,000 in grant requests this year and fulfilled 7 standard grants plus 10 microgrants (microgrants total roughly $3,659.93). Standard grants included materials for middle-school science, decodable books for early readers, a year-long student-led lake monitoring program, an AP environmental science "PocketAir" air-monitoring initiative and additional marching tenor drums for the high school.
Administrators praised student achievements: Mr. Mangilli honored salutatorian Joshua Koshy (4.85 GPA), who will attend Cornell, and valedictorian Connie Wang (4.87 GPA), who will attend Princeton. The board encouraged community volunteerism to sustain fundraising efforts; MLEF leaders said volunteer numbers have decreased and asked for support for future events.
What’s next: Administrators said the district will share more end-of-year presentations at the next board meeting; MLEF said it will continue grant reviews and recruit volunteers over the summer.
