Township staff proposed creating a Historic Preservation Award to recognize property owners who have made significant efforts to preserve or rehabilitate historic properties.
Caroline O'Connor told the Historical Commission she had discussed the idea with the Township Manager and that commissioners agreed the township's 250th anniversary would be an appropriate time to introduce the award. O'Connor said she will compile potential candidates and work with the commission to create qualification criteria; the item will be discussed further at the next Historical Commission meeting.
On the Bowater‑Smedley barn, O'Connor reported there was no update on the condition of the barn ruins. During "For the Good of the Order," Chair Bart Van Valkenburgh said he is researching the Matthews family (Matthews Ford Company) for a local history project and is now working with a contact named Carol after the previous contact Richard died; he noted connections between the family and the Nike Site in Willistown Township.
The commission took no formal action on the award at the June 2 meeting; staff will return with candidate lists and proposed criteria.
