Garden Club presents Yard of Distinction awards to local homeowners

The Garden Club presented its annual Yard of Distinction awards, naming winners in large, medium and small yard categories and encouraging nominations from aldermen and residents.
Carol, speaking for the Garden Club, presented the club's Yard of Distinction awards and described criteria and winners in several categories.
"It's a beauty contest, really," Carol said, explaining the club looks for balance of landscape and hardscape as well as comfortable sitting spots and features that make yards welcoming. Winners announced included John and Kathy Kendall (first place, large yard), Lee and Cynthia Whitster (second place, large), and John and Mary Blattner (first place, medium), among others. Carol encouraged aldermen and residents to nominate yards and said the club receives nominations from the public and sometimes self-nominations.
The club plans to take photos of winners; the council and members of the public praised the volunteers who helped with the city's recent 250th celebration and parade.
