Police say drone footage helped secure peaceful end to armed barricade

Police Chief Seiler reported to the Orrville City Council on June 15 that officers resolved an armed and barricaded incident the previous day with the assistance of drone technology purchased after council authorization.
Seiler said the suspect had previously pointed a firearm at a victim and discharged the firearm inside the residence during negotiations. "A significant factor in the peaceful resolution was the use of the drones which council passed the legislation to purchase," Seiler said. "The smaller drone flew within feet of him and determined if he was armed before officers approached and apprehended him. This technology enhanced officer safety, reduced risk to everyone involved and helped bring a potential tragic situation to a peaceful conclusion."
Chief Seiler thanked the council for supporting equipment purchases and training that, he said, improved officers' tactical options and situational awareness. No additional details about the suspect, charges, or the identity of the victim were provided in the meeting record.
Mayor Plybon publicly thanked the police and assisting agencies for their professionalism and coordinated response during the incident.
