Council approves up to $15,000 trial appropriation for July 4 parade safety

Enumclaw City Council on May 26 approved an appropriation of up to $15,000 on a trial basis to fund additional safety measures for the July 4 parade.
Councilmember Martineau, citing a multi‑agency meeting on parade safety and concern that police resources are already at capacity, proposed funding to cover temporary barricade rental costs and supplemental staffing. "The request is for funding of safety of $15,000 per parade, which includes $8,000 to go towards temporary barriers... and the balance of the 15 for each parade is to hire additional staffing," Martineau said.
City staff described logistical tradeoffs including storage, setup time (a rental company would handle much of the deployment), loss of on‑street parking, and potential crew overtime. Staff recommended renting barriers initially to test deployment and evaluate whether a future capital purchase would be appropriate.
Council amended the original motion to limit the appropriation to up to $15,000 for the July 4 parade as a trial and charged administration and police to coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce. The amendment passed and the amended motion passed on a recorded count of 5–1.
