Newaygo Recreation Authority approves routine minutes and awards $8,724 field maintenance contract

The Newaygo Community Recreation Authority on May 1 approved meeting minutes and the current-month financials and voted to award a $8,724.03 contract to Water Works Irrigation Service for fertilizer, herbicide and weed-control services at the Centerline and Henning baseball fields and the Soccer Fields on Croton Road.
The actions came at an 8:02 a.m. meeting called to order by Chair Jennifer Badgero at Newaygo City Hall. "The budget is right where it should be for this time of year," Jon Schneider said, reporting no immediate budget concerns.
John Clark, a board member, updated the Authority on field maintenance work. Clark said additional diamond dust is needed at the Centerline fields, that Newaygo Little League spent approximately $3,500 on new parking-lot bumpers, and that plaques to honor Duane duChemin (Henning Baseball Fields) and Jeff Cronk (Centerline Baseball Fields) would cost about $8,500; he invited donations payable to Newaygo Little League to help cover plaque costs.
On the contract award, the board heard competing quotes from Christian Brothers and Water Works Irrigation Service before moving to award the work to Water Works. The motion to award the $8,724.03 contract was made by Morgan Heinzman and seconded by Jane Parsley; the minutes record the vote as "AIF/MC." The motion covers fertilizer, herbicide and weed-control services for the Authority's specified fields; board discussion noted that, if Water Works performs this work, the Authority could consider that vendor for future irrigation work to streamline maintenance.
Board members also discussed recurring cracks in the Pickleball courts. Schneider said contractors have sealed the cracks several times over the years, and the board discussed the possibility of replacing courts in the future and potential funding and site options.
The meeting record notes Asa Vermeulen was absent but emailed that a contract with Savin Lake Services had been signed for pond services and that he was waiting for them to begin work. The public-comment period is listed in the minutes but no named public commenters are recorded. Morgan Heinzman moved to adjourn at 8:40 a.m.; John Clark seconded and the motion was recorded AIF/MC. The minutes were signed by Kim Goodin, Secretary.
Next steps noted in the minutes: first-round fertilizer applications were expected to be completed soon and the board will consider longer-term decisions on pickleball courts and possible vendor consolidation for irrigation services.
