New York Mills council approves VFW donation resolution, raises private swim-lesson fee and commends wastewater staff

The New York Mills City Council approved Resolution No. 04-08-2025 acknowledging a cash donation from VFW Post 3289 (motion by Hammond, seconded by Maki). The motion carried by unanimous vote.
On recreation fees, the council approved a change to the cost of private swimming lessons. The minutes record that the motion (moved by Maki, seconded by Hammond) set the fee at $30 per half hour; the minutes also note that Pool Manager Harley Wurst had earlier requested raising the fee to $30 per hour, creating an inconsistency in the record. The council’s motion as recorded sets the fee at $30 per half hour.
Mayor Hetland publicly recognized Public Works Director Kyle Mattson and his staff for receiving a Certificate of Commendation from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for operational excellence at the city’s wastewater treatment facility; the certificate cited consistent compliance with monitoring, operations and maintenance requirements and staff certification in wastewater operations for 2024.
No action was taken on an Otter Tail County offer to assume administration of the Wetland Conservation Act for cities after Public Works Supervisor Mattson said he opposed ceding local control.
