New York Mills public works: PFAS sampling carried out; council permits hiring committee to make offer

Public Works Director Kyle Mattson updated the council on operations, telling members that staff completed inventory work, purchased two new combustible-gas indicators after older units were deemed unserviceable, opened parks for the season and sold excess equipment at auction. Mattson said crews have jetted frozen storm sewers and catch basins and that Jason Hotakainen passed the Minnesota Class C water license test.
Mattson also reported that WSP Engineering and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture assisted with PFAS/PFOS water sampling at the city’s water treatment facility. On personnel, the council authorized the Public Works hiring committee to offer the Maintenance Worker II position to its preferred candidate after interviews; the hire will be ratified at the May council meeting. The council also approved Otter Tail County’s request to hold a household hazardous-waste collection in New York Mills on Sept. 12, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Mattson expressed concern over a separate county proposal to assume Wetland Conservation Act responsibilities for cities, saying it could undermine local project control; council members took no action on that proposal at the meeting.
