Chichester Heritage Commission elects officers, approves tree-fertilization contract and sets event plans

The Chichester Heritage Commission elected its officers, approved a contract with Bartlett Tree Company to fertilize Canterbury Road trees at no cost to the town, and took steps to support upcoming public programs at its March 20, 2026 meeting.
The commission voted to approve the February 19 minutes and then elected the following officers for the year: Lucille Noel as chair, Joyce Lemay as assistant chair, Katherine Shamel as treasurer and Dawn Marshall as secretary. The motions passed; the minutes do not record mover/second or vote tallies.
Treasurer Katherine Shamel reported account balances of $2,617.74 in the Charrette fund and $1,805.97 in the non-lapsing Heritage account, and noted the town operating budget of $1,300 that was approved at Town Meeting.
On stewardship issues, members discussed establishing the border between the greenspace and an adjacent yard so aging trees can be removed before they cause damage; commissioner Matt Stolnis was asked to investigate and to consult with Goosebay Lumber about options to preserve the gazebo roof. The commission also assigned members to inspect town historic signs and report on any upkeep or replacement needs at the May meeting.
The commission approved signing a contract with Bartlett Tree Company to fertilize trees along Canterbury Road at no cost to the commission or town. The minutes record that the motion passed but do not list who moved or seconded it or the vote tally.
The group approved purchasing up to six acrylic brochure holders for Main Street displays; Matt Stolnis will place the online order. The commission also noted that the Chichester Country Store has received a New Hampshire State Historic Register plaque following its approval to the state register.
For programming, the commission and the town library will co-host a humanities talk titled "Moved & Seconded: Town Meeting in New Hampshire, the Present, the Past and the Future," by Rebecca Rule on Friday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Grange Hall. Members discussed joining a citizen planning group for Chichester's 2027 tricentennial celebrations; Stolnis is helping form the group and the commission expressed interest in participating.
Other items: Gloria Beachy will contact Shane Eldridge to advise him to seek select-board approval for his Eagle Scout project to replace the library's wooden cannon mounts; once approved the project should be communicated to the library trustees. Gloria and Joyce reported they have one street left to complete the town's old building survey, aiming to finish that portion by the April meeting. The commission noted upcoming events including an NH Preservation Alliance workshop on April 23 in Portsmouth and the Farm, Forest, and Garden Expo on May 1–2 at the Deerfield Fairgrounds.
The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m. The commission's next meeting is scheduled for April 16, 2026; Katherine Shamel will set up Zoom and Gloria Beachy will run the meeting as Katherine expects to arrive late.
