A committee member asked whether the white clamshell-style food trays used to package prepared foods are recyclable, and the committee agreed to seek clarification from the town's plastic recycler.
At the Feb. 26 meeting, Janet Lewis asked about recycling white plastic trays that look like clamshell containers. Lewis said the trays seem heavier and "could be recycled with 1-7 plastics." Al Couch agreed that "it looks like it could be recycled" and said he would try to contact the plastic recycling company that handles the town's material to clarify whether those containers are accepted.
The committee also discussed that many containers carry a recycling symbol but are nevertheless not accepted by processors (for example, black plastic containers). Members expressed hope for future improvements to product packaging.
No formal changes to collection procedures or a vote were recorded; the committee assigned follow-up to Couch to confirm acceptance criteria with the recycler.
