Council hears report on well failure and large unaccounted-for water loss

Public Works Director Kyle Mattson told the New York Mills City Council on Feb. 11 that the city experienced a check valve failure on one of its wells that left it operating on a single functioning well for about a week; the repair was completed by Thein Well.
Mattson said staff have been investigating significant water loss and identified two areas where water was being lost; a bypass has been installed at one location and he expects to repair the other within one to two weeks. He estimated up to 250,000 gallons per day were unaccounted for before the bypass. Staff are continuing efforts to locate the source(s) of loss.
Because frost levels are near 70 inches, Public Works has contacted homeowners to urge precautionary running of water to prevent freeze-ups; residents are asked to monitor tap temperatures and contact the City Office if temperatures fall to 40 degrees or lower. Mattson said bills will be adjusted to normal usage for residents who notify the City Office prior to running water.
The Public Works Committee accepted sealed bids for a Toro unit and approved Freshwater Education District as the highest bidder at $8,618 for the unit and attachments; Council acknowledged the Public Works report.
