Concord HDC approves two exterior renovation applications, requests revised plans for heat pumps

The Town of Concord Historic Districts Commission approved two residential exterior applications on July 8: a patio-door and transom replacement at 100 Keis/Cays Road (Unit 106) and a multi-part exterior restoration at 242 Lexington Road.
Scott Thayer represented the applicant for 100 Keis/Cays Road and described a like-for-like replacement: removal of the existing patio door and transom and installation of an Andersen 400-series sliding door/transom with matching exterior trim and paint. The commission had seen similar work at the building before and, with no public comment, approved the application unanimously.
At 242 Lexington Road, a representative (transcript: Peter Doss Haverly) presented plans to replace failing siding on one elevation with red cedar shingles to match existing, remove inappropriate corner boards and reweave shingles, install a new painted pine porch skirt, replace one granite step, add a bluestone patio with a cobblestone border, and undertake interior kitchen and bathroom work that requires vents and revised plumbing stacks. The homeowner performed a voluntary HERS blower-door test, which was provided to the board to show energy improvements with the replacement sashes.
The applicant proposed replacing window sash only (not full-frame replacements) with wood historic-style sashes from Trimline Windows to preserve existing trim and parting strips. Commissioners asked about storm windows and shutters; the applicant agreed to remove questionable shutters for now and return with details if they are to be retained. Commissioners required that the final plan show the heat-pump locations at the rear of the house and the proposed screening fence as presented; paint chips were accepted for administrative approval.
Commissioner Tim Whitney moved to approve 242 Lexington as submitted with the condition that the two heat pumps be correctly shown at the rear with screening; the motion carried unanimously. Both applicants were thanked and released following the approvals.
The HDC also approved minutes from previous meetings with minor corrections (for example, clarifying that the nation's 250th anniversary, not Concord’s, was referenced) and noted an update on 51 Walden Street will return at a future meeting.
