Following the public hearing and adoption of the data center moratorium, the Town of Canton board conducted scheduled municipal business.
The board approved last month’s minutes and heard correspondence and announcements, including a Chamber of Commerce notice about a craft and wine market on Sept. 12 at the Saint Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum. A chamber representative outlined vendor capacity and expected attendance.
Staff presented the town finance report and account balances. The meeting included an insurance update from the town’s insurer summary noting several proposed rate increases across plans; the materials reflected a range of hypothetical adjustments to aid budget planning.
The board discussed renewal of a lease with Elevid for a town space, noting the company anticipated renewing for a two‑year term and proposed increasing monthly rent from $1,250 to $1,350. The board agreed to request the formal lease document and prepare an addendum or updated agreement.
The board acknowledged the written resignation of Troy Parla from the Board of Assessment Review (effective June 23, 2026), leaving two vacancies on that body. Later in the meeting Assessor Cindy Brand announced her intent to retire effective Dec. 21, 2026; she offered to assist with the transition and board members thanked her for years of service.
Before adjournment the board voted to enter executive session to discuss a contractual item.
Next steps: staff will follow up on the Elevid lease paperwork, post the vacancies for the Board of Assessment Review, and coordinate transition planning related to the assessor’s announced retirement.
