Upper Merion EAC reports Purple Martin house, $4,000 pollinator-garden grant and community plant swap

The Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) on June 2 reported several local conservation and community-engagement projects, including installation of a Purple Martin house at Heuser Park and a $4,000 BCA grant to establish a pollinator garden at the Arboretum Building.
The council said a Purple Martin house has been installed “at Heuser Park on the hill north of the parking lot” and noted that Evelyn Ankers and her son are monitoring it weekly. An UMHS student received a scholarship to build bluebird houses; the EAC plans to coordinate installation and monitoring of those houses with the township Park and Rec department and a school group once the projects are complete.
Council members also reported that Bird Town will host a seminar titled “Building a Backyard Bird Sanctuary” on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6:00 p.m. The EAC said it received a $4,000 BCA grant to support a pollinator garden at the Arboretum Building and that a co-sponsored project with the Boy Scouts (contact: John Durland) was approved.
The council reviewed a May 2 plant swap held at Norview Farms that drew about 40 participants. Members said there was interest in hosting another plant swap at the end of the Farmers Market season and discussed adding a dedicated “seeds” section for future exchanges.
No formal board action was recorded for the Bird Town items during this meeting beyond reporting and planning. Council members indicated ongoing volunteer monitoring and coordination with township Park and Rec; the minutes did not assign additional follow-up tasks or timelines.
