Kurt Daniels, representing Cochran Engineering, told the New Melle Board of Aldermen on April 15 that all easements for the Mill Street improvements have been acquired and recorded and that the project will move forward after the New Melle Festival in June.
The announcement, made during the engineering report, said the Foristell Road trail project still requires approval from the Missouri Department of Transportation before work can begin. Daniels also said temporary repairs and cost estimates for potholes and other road damage will be reviewed because the Foristell Road improvement is not scheduled until 2026.
During new-business discussion, Alderman Janet Karrenbrock said Karrenbrock Construction will submit a cost estimate to repair about 150 feet of Schutzen Street beginning at State Highway D, addressing a deteriorating stretch of roadway. The Board did not vote on a contract; the item remains a pending repair estimate.
Why it matters: Mill Street improvements and the trail are local infrastructure priorities that affect traffic, pedestrian access and future maintenance costs. The Foristell Road trail—if approved by MoDOT—would extend active-transportation options but cannot proceed until the state agency grants the necessary approvals.
Next steps: Cochran Engineering will proceed with Mill Street work after the festival; the city will await formal notification from MoDOT on the Foristell Road trail and review repair estimates for potholes and Schutzen Street before considering procurement or contracting decisions.
