Lanett council approves series of unanimous resolutions and records interim fire chief appointment

At the 6:00 p.m. meeting at the Lanett Municipal Complex, council members approved Resolution 08-24-12 honoring the life and legacy of Chief Johnny Allen. The council then adopted Resolution 08-24-14 authorizing staff to seek grant funds to purchase two Defibtech Lifeline ARM chest-compression systems and related accessories for Fire/EMS.
The council also approved Resolution 08-24-16 to renew the memorandum of understanding with Lanett City Schools for school resource officers and passed Resolution 08-24-17 converting the police department to a 14-day work period. Mayor Jamie L. Heard said the shorter work cycle would help reduce overtime because, under the prior scheduling approach, officers had to work 28 days before qualifying for overtime pay.
Resolution 08-24-18 amended an earlier authorization (07-24-01) to allow Recreation and Nutrition to reapply for a DOT grant after project costs changed, according to Code Enforcement Officer Johnny Wood. The council approved Resolution 08-24-19 to impose weed nuisance abatement; Wood said 36 property owners would receive 21 days to clean their properties before abatement action could proceed.
The minutes record that Resolution 08-24-13 — titled in the minutes as an appointment of an interim fire chief named Jamie Heard — was read, moved by Councilmember Tony Malone, seconded by Councilmember Tifton Dobbs, and adopted unanimously. The minutes also state that Mayor Jamie L. Heard "had him stand as an introduction." The council minutes do not clarify whether the named appointee is the same Jamie Heard who presided as mayor; the record shows only that the resolution passed.
All recorded motions on the items above carried by unanimous vote of the five members present: Mayor Jamie L. Heard and Councilmembers Tony Malone, Tamalita Autry, Tifton Dobbs and Angelia F. Thomas. Councilmember Tucker is listed as absent in the minutes.
