Commissioners pass package of road and utility ordinances and approve County Road 56 extension

The board handled a set of roadway-related items together: ordinance 2026-0-4 (amendment for County Road 61), an amendment to county highway regulations (2026-0-5), two public utility permit ordinances (2026-0-6 and 2026-0-7), and an ordinance addressing oversized vehicles (2026-0-8). Legal counsel explained an amendment inserted into multiple ordinances that explicitly states nothing in the ordinances changes Indiana state law on weight limits for farm vehicles. "Nothing in this ordinance obligates Indiana law on weight permitted for farm vehicles," counsel read aloud during discussion.
Earlier under old business, the board discussed an amendment to extend the contract for County Road 56; staff explained the extension through 06/20/2027 was needed because of settling in a peat area and to preserve the county’s eligibility to receive the 80% state reimbursement. "This will extend us up through 06/20/2027," the presenter said when explaining the extension.
Each ordinance was moved, seconded and accepted on 2nd and 3rd readings as applicable, and the contract extension motion was approved. The repeated voice votes were recorded as carried "3 to 0" in the minutes.
What this means: the ordinances incorporate the clarified language preserving state-law exemptions for farm vehicles and enact the county's updated permitting language; the County Road 56 contract will be extended to allow completion of remaining work with state reimbursement to follow.
