Sullivan County launches first reading of revised food ordinance; mobile-food permit to align with state fee

County staff presented a first reading of a proposed update to Sullivan County’s food ordinance, which the presenter said dates from 1995 and needs revision to reflect recent state changes.
The presenter said the state changed its food code last year and the draft ordinance is intended to harmonize local enforcement with state requirements. Key changes include a new plan-review requirement for building or remodeling projects, updated inspection and remediation procedures, and references to the state code so future state changes will be reflected locally.
Staff also discussed a change to the mobile-food permitting process: the state will implement a statewide mobile-food permit with a required $450 fee. The county’s current mobile-food fee is $100. The presenter recommended implementing the new ordinance this summer but delaying fee changes until Jan. 1 to align with the state process.
Commissioners did not vote at this meeting; the ordinance will be advertised for first reading and return for subsequent readings per standard procedure.
