Commission backs four Neighborhood Complete Streets projects for county board review

The Arlington Transportation Commission on July 9 recommended that the County Board advance four Neighborhood Complete Streets projects into detailed design and implementation.
Michelle Stafford, program coordinator for Neighborhood Complete Streets, described four locally focused projects that would complete sidewalk links and add pedestrian safety features: North Van Buren Street (18th–19th St N), North Tuckahoe Street (18th–19th St N), 13th Street N (North Quincy to North Lincoln) in Virginia Square, and Sherlington Road (S. Glebe to 22nd St S) in Green Valley. The projects include sidewalk infill, curb ramp improvements, tactile/directional cues for people with visual impairments, modest bump‑outs, and minor on‑street parking adjustments.
Stafford said the commission receives public applications, screens proposals to ensure they are on local streets, then scores candidates on crash history, severity, roadway condition, activity generators (schools, transit, trails), equity emphasis area designations and buildability. She said that once a project passes thresholds staff collect speed and ADT data and evaluate feasibility, including easement needs.
Commissioners praised the projects and urged continued attention to narrowing streets where possible, additional traffic‑calming measures, and closer coordination with the fire department on emergency access tradeoffs. Vice Chair Furman and others highlighted North Tuckahoe Street and the need for all‑way stop or yield treatments at specific intersections; staff noted some corridor changes are scheduled through other capital projects but encouraged continuing advocacy for intersection fixes.
Chair Moradovich moved the commission recommendation to the County Board; the motion was seconded and recorded as passing (meeting transcript records 9 in favor). Staff said the county board will consider these projects on its July agenda, after which projects advance to detailed design and implementation if approved.
Speakers said the program uses data to prioritize projects and staff are actively doing outreach to equity emphasis areas to ensure broader representation among applicants and nominations.
