County readies equipment purchase and several road and bridge projects

Superintendent Steve Murphy told the Wilson County Road Commission the department is pursuing several maintenance and capital items. Murphy asked for approval to buy a knuckle-boom/grapple truck on state contract to improve tree- and debris-clearing efficiency; a commissioner moved to accept the state bid and the board approved the purchase by voice vote.
Murphy also reported recent paving and patching activity (6.71 miles recorded), an upcoming pre-construction meeting for resurfacing Cole's Ferry and progress on the Stewart's Ferry bridge (beams set and deck work planned). Several bridge projects (Soaps Creek and Eastover) remain subject to state hydraulic and structural reviews before contracting; staff emphasized that state inspections control timing and noted the county's contract windows run through January, which affects contractor scheduling.
During the same portion of the meeting staff discussed a planned short-term road closure (around July 17) to replace an undersized culvert/box and the need for engineered detour signage; staff said they will try to schedule work to minimize school impacts and will post closure notices ahead of work. The board also approved routine items including a junk-tire report and surplus of a heavily worn pickup truck.
Separately, in new business the board discussed Hickory Road resurfacing and developer traffic impacts from a large subdivision; staff proposed a temporary drag-and-top fix and seeking letters of credit from the developer to cover future restoration, and the board authorized staff to proceed with that plan.
