Oxford pauses SBR expansion at wastewater plant pending additional ammonia testing

The Oxford City Council on Feb. 11 heard an update from the city engineer on plans for the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) expansion at the wastewater plant and directed staff to pause further work until additional testing is completed.
The engineer reported that the equipment manufacturer had provided new designs for the SBR expansion but said ammonia levels are still being monitored. Councilmembers agreed to halt movement on the sewer plant project until results of additional testing this year are available. The engineer also said a smoke test will be performed and that residents will be notified in advance; Councilmember Hennes asked that Ben review past test results as part of the follow-up.
The engineer added that preliminary plans for a bridge project remain on schedule and are due to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources next week. The council did not make a formal budget appropriation for the SBR project at this meeting; members instead paused further project activity pending the monitoring results and the planned smoke test.
Next steps included scheduling and conducting the smoke test with resident notice and returning SBR expansion discussion to the council after the new test results are reviewed.
