Polk County approves $347,082.83 pay application for Polk SE bridge; road crews report millings and next steps

The Polk County Board of County Commissioners approved Pay Application #2 for the Polk SE bridge in the amount of $347,082.83 on June 16, 2026, following a recommendation from Highway Superintendent Theis. Chairman Jerry Westring moved to approve the payment; Commissioner Boruch seconded and the roll call vote was unanimous.
The board heard an update from Highway Superintendent Theis on road department activity. Theis reported that millings have been placed at the north end of the blacktop north of Shelby and additional millings have been placed at the county fairgrounds. He said guardrails will be installed on the Polk SE bridge before the road is graded and graveled.
Theis also reported the next step for the Lone Star West project is assignment of a HUD field representative. Commissioners did not set any additional local action on Lone Star West at the meeting pending HUD assignment.
Commissioner Boss asked the board to consider installing blinking stop signs at major highway junctions to increase driver awareness. The board said it does not have jurisdiction over those intersections because they involve state and/or federal highways; Boss said he would contact Ronnie Carlson with the Nebraska Department of Roads to relay the request.
The meeting adjourned at 11:05 a.m.; the board will meet next on June 23 and July 7, 2026.
