District report: Summer Excel enrollment dips to 383, special-education and ELL participation noted

Dr. Kieser presented a summary of Summer Excel participation, saying, “We had 383 students enroll” this summer compared with 403 the previous year. He said the district will provide a formal Summer Excel report at a future meeting.
Kieser said participation by race and ethnicity in Summer Excel largely reflected district proportions, with a slightly lower share of Black/African American students and slightly higher share of multiracial students in the program. He noted that students with disabilities have been signing up at higher rates “the last couple of years,” with about 18% of Summer Excel enrollees — compared with a district average of about 16%.
Kieser also reported that English-language learners have trended upward in Summer Excel but remain below districtwide levels. When asked whether families are surveyed about why they enroll or do not enroll in Summer Excel, Kieser said he would check whether the family survey includes a Summer Excel question.
The board did not take action on the report; Kieser said the data will be presented again as part of an upcoming formal report to the board.
