Ridgway council asks staff to study process for vacating Charles Street right-of-way

Town Attorney Nerlin told the council that the Strategic Plan includes researching the potential vacation of the platted right-of-way in the 900 and 1000 blocks of Charles Street, which if improved would extend Elizabeth Street. Nerlin reviewed the code sections pertinent to vacating streets, alleys, rights-of-way and easements and asked whether the council wished to pursue a vacation process.
Council discussion followed; no formal vacation was approved. Instead, staff were directed to research how other municipalities have handled similar vacations and to prepare a proposed process for further Council consideration. The direction included examining legal steps, public-notice requirements and possible impacts to adjacent property owners and utilities.
The council did not set a final timeline for the research but requested a follow-up report for additional discussion at a future meeting. Any formal vacating action would require subsequent Council hearings and compliance with pertinent town code requirements.
