Road and weed department updates: bridge work, JDLink reporting, ditch mowing reminders

Polk County road and weed department staff briefed the board May 26 on ongoing maintenance and control work.
Road Foreman Ericson reported dirt work on the Polk SE bridge and said crews would grade the remaining mile before reopening that road. Beebe Street at Osceola’s south edge is open to traffic. Ericson said Superintendent Theis is working with John Deere representatives to generate reports from the JDLink program and that millings will be placed next week at the end of the Shelby North blacktop and at the fairgrounds.
Weed Superintendent Carlson said a newspaper ad reminded landowners to mow road ditches. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture spot-checked several sections of Polk County and found only light infestations in some areas. Carlson reported a pasture was custom sprayed for leafy spurge and that shop yards and several blind intersections had been treated; thistle inspections continue and a helicopter survey of river areas is planned for early June. Carlson also said the department continues to receive cost-share chemical requests from landowners.
