Polk County commissioners voted May 26 to renew the county’s current $2,600-deductible PPO health insurance through the NACO Blue Cross Blue Shield group and to transition to a similar Medica plan offered through Benefit Management Services effective Jan. 1.
Commissioner Boss moved for the renewal and transition; Richard Boruch seconded the motion. The roll call vote was unanimous: Boss, aye; Boruch, aye; Westring, aye. The board also approved reimbursing employees for the portion of the deductible they pay between $500 and $2,600.
Representatives from Benefit Management Services and NACO Benefit Services answered board questions about plan design and timing. The Medica plan was described to the board as offering premium savings; delaying the start date to Jan. 1 allows Benefit Management representatives time to meet individually with employees. A Health Savings Account option will be available starting Jan. 1, and the county said it may add dental or vision coverage at that time.
The decision was framed as a benefits-administration and cost-management step; no funding amounts for the premium savings or the reimbursement pool were specified in the minutes.
