Boyce council to collect speed data and press VDOT on Greenway/Main safety fixes

The Boyce Town Council directed staff to collect speed sign data and follow up with the Virginia Department of Transportation about traffic-calming measures at the Greenway Avenue and Main Street intersection.
Town Administrator Matt Hoff will compile speed data from Dec. 1–31, 2024 on Greenway Avenue as the first step toward a formal speed-limit reduction process. Councilmembers said the data collection and a subsequent meeting with VDOT are prerequisites for making changes to posted speeds.
Council also discussed intersection improvements that VDOT had previously indicated could be funded, including four bump-outs, electronic pedestrian signage and marked crosswalks. Members discussed eliminating a nearby handicap parking space at the church to prioritize pedestrian safety near the intersection and asked Hoff to notify VDOT that the town is ready to proceed; Mayor Zack Hudson said he would contact VDOT.
No formal project timeline or funding breakdown was presented at the meeting; Council asked staff to pursue data collection and coordination with VDOT.
