FENTON, Mo. — The Fenton Board of Aldermen Committee on June 4 approved amendments to the City Hall administrative assistant job description and a minor change to the City Clerk job description, and directed staff to advertise the administrative assistant position as part-time, flex, or full-time depending on the candidate.
City Administrator Andrea N. Finkbiner told the Committee the administrative assistant duties better align with the City Clerk’s responsibilities and that staff proposed allowing the position to be filled as part-time, flex or full-time to broaden the applicant pool. Finkbiner summarized the difference between the options: part-time positions work a set number of hours below 28.8 per week and earn pro-rated paid time off; flex employees work variable schedules up to a capped annual hour limit but are not eligible for overtime or benefits; and full-time remains the traditional option.
The Committee discussed front-desk coverage and continuity. Alderman Scott Maserang said he views the administrative assistant as the “first point of contact” and expressed concern that a flex schedule could leave residents waiting when other office staff are out. Alderwoman Susan Jokerst and Alderwoman Robin Huels favored a flex approach with the option to revisit the arrangement if it does not meet operational needs. After debate, Alderman Maserang moved to open the topic to the full Board; that procedural motion carried. Alderwoman Jokerst then moved to approve the job-description amendments and advertise the position part-time/flex depending on candidate; the motion was seconded by Alderman Brian Wisbrock. The Committee recorded the final approval with the Board voting to adopt the amendment and advertising approach; the minutes note Alderman Wisbrock cast a nay vote on the final approval.
The minutes also record that Public Works Director Dan Howard will receive recognition for 25 years of City service and that the award will be presented at the June 25 Board meeting.
What happens next: Staff will post the amended job description and begin recruitment under the approved advertising approach. The administrative change to the City Clerk job description — specifying that certain duties report to the City Clerk — was approved as presented.
