Fenton committee approves cameras, signage and motion lights for pickleball courts after vandalism reports

The motion was made by Jay Arons and seconded by Thomas Byron. The Committee approved the measure by voice vote: 6 Ayes, 0 Nays, 1 Absent, 0 Abstain.
Arons raised specific concerns about smashed paddles, damage to nets, excessive trash (including sunflower seeds) on the courts and people riding bikes or skateboards on the playing surface; he said he believed most incidents are occurring overnight. The Committee decided to add cameras and signage acknowledging surveillance and to install motion-activated lighting to deter after-hours activity.
Alderwoman Robin Huels told the Committee that the Board of Aldermen will consider lighting for the parking lot north of the courts at the Board's June 11 committee meeting. The Committee did not specify contractors, timelines or funding sources for the security equipment during the meeting.
The Committee had earlier approved the May 4, 2026 meeting minutes (motion by Mike Abbott, seconded by Gary Johnson) by the same voice vote tally. The Parks and Recreation Committee's next regular meeting is scheduled for July 6, 2026.
