Local fire chiefs report rescue training and water-tank progress; township begins pond-access review and park bridge work continues

At the Oct. 9 meeting, North Towamensing Fire Company (NTFC) Chief Gary Kuntz and Lynn-Portland Fire Company (LPFC) Chief Kevin Utt reported on emergency-response activity and training.
Kuntz said NTFC has responded to 146 emergency calls year-to-date, continues rescue training, completed a water-tank pad and installed a hydrant for a tank project, and held a successful fall bash on Sept. 20; he thanked the road crew for assistance and noted the upcoming Trick-or-Treat event on Oct. 25. Utt reported LPFC’s 59 emergency calls to date, recent joint water-rescue training Sept. 29, and multiple members beginning Fire II and paramedic training; he also listed upcoming fundraisers and breakfast events.
Vice Chairman Frederick Najarian presented Planning Commission recommendations on creating emergency access to farm ponds; he distributed a pond list for the fire chiefs to review and said the township will notify landowners by letter after the chiefs recommend which ponds to include. The board recorded that pond-access recommendations will proceed to landowner notification but did not include draft letter text or a schedule in the minutes.
Park updates included completion of a lean-to, playground repairs, and construction of a new footbridge at the Lehigh Carbon Technical Institute (LCTI) with expected completion by early November; Ronald Jerdon suggested dedicating the bridge and involving family members tied to the original dedication in a short ceremony. Road master Matt Henderson reported ongoing fall maintenance, blacktop patching, equipment preparation for winter and that he had contacted PennDOT about mowing state roads under contract (noting recent contracts may not include monetary kickbacks but sometimes allow use of PennDOT equipment).
