Board of Works reviews multiple nuisance and abandoned-property cases, schedules follow-ups

Staff member (speaker 3) presented multiple parcels with photos and status updates: 102 8th Street SW (contractor/bid follow-up and visible trash/dumpster), a parcel near 76th 8th Street SW where the property may be reverting to the bank and mowing invoices remain unpaid, and 400 I Street NW where contractor scheduling was delayed. For 109 10th Street NE, staff said the property appears to be in an estate or trust, mailed notices received no response and several neighbors reported occupancy or neglect; the board agreed to keep the parcel on the list and pursue title work. Staff also reported work on 760 G Street NE (mowed once this season at $500) and said they would check mortgageholder information.
Committee members asked staff to verify mailing addresses, run title searches and confirm which banks hold mortgages, so that liens and invoices can be addressed by the appropriate party. For properties with abandoned vehicles or overgrown yards (notably 380 I Street NW and other I Street parcels), board members discussed notifying police for enforcement regarding registration/plates and emphasized first-contact outreach before removal. The board added a parcel associated with a burning-lawnmower complaint at 40 Southeast 8th Street to next month’s agenda after staff confirmed a 10-day notice had been issued.
No ordinance changes or new policies were proposed; the board’s actions were procedural: continue monitoring, perform title/mortgage checks, keep mowing schedules where needed and return updates to the board. Staff committed to follow up and bring information on mortgageholders and timelines to the next meeting.
