Algoma council adopts 2026 budget, sets tax levy and approves volunteer stipends

The Algoma Common Council on Dec. 1 approved the city’s 2026 budget and set the 2025 tax levy, and unanimously approved stipend schedules for volunteer fire and rescue personnel.
Jamie, a city staff member who presented the budget, told the council the mill rate rose from $17.28 per $1,000 in 2024 to a proposed $18.03 per $1,000 for 2026, and attributed part of the increase to higher general-obligation debt payments, the Algoma School District levy and an increase in the city’s assessed valuation. "It was $17.28 per thousand in 2024. This year will be $18.03 per thousand," Jamie said.
Councilors moved to advance the budget and adopt the tax levy by approving Resolution 12-38-2025. The motion was carried on a roll call in which the clerk recorded affirmative votes from the members called.
In related action, the council approved Resolution 12-39-2025 to set stipends for fire service volunteers for 2026 and Resolution 12-40-2025 to set stipends for rescue service volunteers. During discussion on the fire stipends, members clarified that the amounts listed in the packet were annual figures and that payments are issued quarterly.
Council also adopted an amendment to Resolution 12-41-2025 to correct an adoption date printed in the document (the date was corrected to read 2024) and approved Resolution 12-42-2025 appointing election officials for the 2026–27 cycle.
