Sanbornton chair pushes to limit highway director discretion in driveway rules

Chairman Andy Sanborn said the Town of Sanbornton Planning Board should narrow the discretionary authority he said was included in attorney Christine Filmore’s proposed driveway regulations and adopt clearer, more objective criteria.
Sanbornton proposed removing several discretionary items that would fall under the highway director’s authority and instead use definitive standards, Sanborn said. He asked that Filmore’s draft and the board’s notes be sent to Paul Dexter for review and that language the board controls be separated from matters under the fire chief’s and highway director’s jurisdiction.
The discussion also referenced a draft of driveway regulations prepared by Sanborn. The board concluded that items belonging to the planning board, the fire chief and the highway director should be separated and revised before another review.
Next steps: the board agreed to revise the draft language to separate jurisdictional responsibilities and forward the attorney’s language and the board’s notes to Paul Dexter for his review.
