Sanbornton conservation commissioners plan trail maintenance, iNaturalist program and public outreach

Paul Stevens reported to the Sanbornton Conservation Commission on May 14 that the town forest’s "This Is My Song" trail needs maintenance following a recent hike, and that map kiosks at trailheads require refilling. Stevens and Chris Fontenot proposed adding a scannable QR code at kiosks so visitors can access digital maps on their phones.
Members who visited the Adams property during a guided hike — including Chair Dave Perry, Vice Chair Bob Silvia and Paul Stevens — noted a reduced beaver population at that site. Peggy Graham asked for permission to blaze markers for the Heritage Trail; Chair Perry said he will look into it and continue the conversation with Ms. Graham.
Chris Fontenot demonstrated how the iNaturalist app can be used to record wildlife, plant, fungus and insect sightings within Sanbornton’s boundaries. Fontenot said he, Chair Dave Perry and member Brad Crosby will refine the program and cross-reference observations with local knowledge to help the commission make conservation recommendations. Members suggested offering a webinar or Old Home Day activity to teach the public how to contribute observations.
Fontenot also proposed creating member nametags so commissioners can display their names and the commission affiliation at public events; Vice Chair Silvia said he would speak with Julie Lonergan about producing the nametags. Stevens and Brian LaRoche reported they will attend forthcoming Trail Maintenance and Design Training.
