Council adopts Project Phoenix agreement with Jasper County to realign fire and EMS services; partial operations began July 1

On its second reading, the council approved an ordinance authorizing execution of agreements with Jasper County to realign fire and emergency medical services, a plan staff described as Project Phoenix.
Mr. Gruber (city staff) summarized that Hardeeville has already begun responding to some calls in southern Jasper County as of July 1 and that the city plans to assume the remaining services Oct. 1 after hiring roughly 20 additional personnel to meet operational needs.
Council members praised the intergovernmental collaboration and emphasized public safety and efficient use of local resources. One council member asked whether the CAD (computer-aided dispatch) system had been fully switched to show Hardeeville call signs; staff said the switchover is partial, with some calls still routed to Jasper County until the city assumes all responsibilities.
A council member said the agreement would reduce response logistics and improve efficiency in the southern portion of the county. Council moved, seconded and voted to adopt the ordinance at second reading.
Council requested continued outreach to gated communities and other residents so the change is evolutionary and well understood by those affected.
