Seven Fairfax County breweries have produced a limited-edition IPA called Fairfax 250 that debuted at Brewfest as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
A presenter said the beer was designed to “tell the story of Fairfax County” and that brewers met in a taproom to work out a recipe meant to sell in local taprooms and accompany county celebrations. “We chose an IPA because hops come from all over the world, and what we are focusing on about Fairfax County is that it's a very diverse community,” the presenter said.
Organizers described Fairfax 250 as a light hazy IPA with bright citrus notes, a hint of pine and a touch of bitterness for balance, packaged as a commemorative four-pack whose labels highlight the county’s history, scenic natural beauty and family-friendly destinations. The presenter said the beer debuted at Brewfest, where community members and county leaders gathered to support local businesses and partnerships.
An agency official highlighted county support for the local brewing industry, noting Brewfest’s food trucks and crowds and saying, “We have such support for our businesses through our Department of Economic Initiatives, through our land use process.” The official framed that support as part of broader efforts to develop a sense of place in Fairfax County and to help small businesses grow.
Speakers emphasized practical knowledge-sharing among brewers — swapping mash temperatures and hop-usage techniques — as a primary benefit of collaboration. “It gives us the opportunity to expand our horizon, expand our knowledge base because all we want is to see each other succeed,” one presenter said.
Another presenter said the breweries hope Fairfax 250 will introduce more people to the county’s beer scene and encourage exploration of local offerings: “If we’re able to incorporate our love and care into an amazing beer that gets people wanting to explore more about Fairfax County… then I'm absolutely for it.”
Fairfax 250 is available for a limited time this summer at participating breweries, organizers said.
