Sunland Park’s council on July 7 approved a standard AIA architectural contract to advance a feasibility and market study for a proposed indoor water‑park and entertainment-district concept.
City staff said council members and staff recently visited Grand Prairie, Texas to view a similar EPIC destinations project and that the city had engaged a Houston‑based architect/developer to assess market demand, likely locations, costs and potential funding paths. "We think that it is feasible in this area given that…there wasn't any other plan for that kind of attraction in this market," said the presenter, who described preliminary planning and next steps.
Staff characterized the item as a contract (standard AIA terms) for architectural services rather than a final city subsidy or guarantee; councilors asked only procedural questions and moved to approve the contract, which passed unanimously by roll call.
What’s next: The contract authorizes the architect to proceed with a deeper market, site and cost study that staff will return to council to discuss potential funding models, infrastructure needs and community impacts prior to any developer agreement or public funding decision.
