Selectmen trim, set funding approaches on several warrant items and budget requests

At their Jan. 12 meeting, the Springfield Board of Selectmen reviewed draft warrant articles and made several funding and process decisions for the upcoming town meeting.
The Board voted not to bring the Baptist Pond appropriation to town meeting. For highway paving, the Board discussed an appropriation of $125,000 to be raised through taxation. The highway loader warrant article was framed as a $250,000 purchase with $100,000 to come from the unreserved fund balance and the town applying for a grant that, if received, would reduce the net appropriation required. Selectman Steve Dzubak moved that fire department equipment costs be included in the operating budget rather than placed on a standalone warrant article; Selectman Jen Roberts seconded, and the motion passed.
Board members indicated they will seek to preserve the town’s unreserved fund balance to reduce tax impacts and encouraged the fire department to pursue fundraising in addition to budget requests. Several procedural and budgetary follow-ups were assigned to staff.
