Thayne applies for federal streetlight grant, schedules open house; council notes community-center repairs

Mayor Devin Simpson announced that the Town of Thayne is applying for a U.S. Department of Energy grant to help fund new streetlights, with an application deadline at the end of October. The town has ordered lights to be installed behind the THAYNE sign on the canal and will hold a public open house on Sept. 18 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Community Center gym to discuss the project and related matters.
Councilmember Pelletier reported that a pinhole leak in a copper pipe in the volleyball closet at the Community Center was repaired and isolation valves installed. The council is still trying to contact a contractor to complete security-camera installation and continues work on a playground area. Councilmember Heward outlined current recreation programming, including flag and tackle football and volleyball signups, and said Etna Elementary asked to use the Community Center parking lot to unload potatoes for an event.
Mayor Simpson also raised a maintenance concern: a tree near the flag on the canal is catching and tearing the flag; council members discussed how to address the tree near the flag. The town will proceed with the open house and the streetlight grant application process.
