Radar sign data: most drivers slow on Surry Dam Road, but some high speeds recorded

Selectman Ron Profaizer reported to the board on Dec. 1 the results from a radar speed sign deployed on Surry Dam Road and the board approved moving the device to Joslin Road for further monitoring.
Profaizer said the device recorded an average daily traffic count of 110 vehicles and a total of 4,772 vehicles during the reporting period. He reported that 85% of drivers did not exceed 25 mph and 98% remained under 35 mph; the minutes record that about 25 vehicles (reported as 0.5) exceeded 40 mph. The highest recorded speed was 60 mph at 1:30 a.m.
The selectmen moved the radar sign to Joslin Road for a 30-day monitoring period and then will remove it for the winter, citing concerns about the sign's plastic housing and battery life.
The board did not record any enforcement action at the meeting; the monitoring appears intended to gather additional speed and volume data before pursuing further measures.
