Selectmen vote to split cost after stones removed during bridge work on Streeter Pond Road

The Sugar Hill Selectmen voted unanimously Dec. 1 to split the cost of repairing a stone wall and replacing trees on Streeter Pond Road after a contractor removed stones outside the contracted construction area and did not return them.
Resident Cliff Hughes said the contractor had told him the removed stones would be brought back but they were not found, forcing him to purchase new stone and replace trees at a cost of roughly $10,000. Mr. Hughes told the board he felt the town should share responsibility for remediation because the contractor worked outside the contract scope.
Selectman Rusty Talbot moved to split the remediation costs; Selectman Richard Bielefield seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Town Engineer Red McCarthy was directed to follow up with the contractor to resolve the matter.
The board also accepted an invitation from Mr. Hughes to hold the town’s Fourth of July potluck and fireworks at Ski Hearth Farm.
By the end of the meeting the board had recorded the expense estimate and the direction to Town Engineer McCarthy to pursue recovery from the contractor; no further financial details or deadlines were announced.
