The Sawyer County Veterans Service Office reported a surge in contacts and compensation activity in May, the veteran service officer told the administrative committee.
"Our walk ins are still quite high," the officer, identified as Gary, said. He provided monthly counts—about 455 phone calls, roughly 915 letters/emails/faxes and 172 office visits—and said the office had submitted 85 disability compensation and pension claims through the end of May. For claims decided in veterans' favor, Gary said the office received $442,658.46 in retroactive payments.
Gary also described outreach efforts co‑managed with the La Crosse Vet Center, counseling sessions and a "coffee and conversation" outreach event that averages about a dozen attendees. Committee members asked whether the office needed receptionist help; Gary said additional staff could help but physical space in the office is constrained and expansion would incur costs.
