Kent County Election Commission approves precinct consolidations and certifies ballots for May 5 special election

The Kent County Election Commission met on March 26, 2026 at 2:31 P.M. in Courtroom 9D of the Kent County Courthouse and unanimously approved precinct consolidation resolutions, a proposals list and ballot proofs for the May 5, 2026 Special Election.
Elections Director Mike Sullivan opened the agenda item noting the purpose of the meeting was to finalize consolidations, the proposals list and ballots ahead of the special election. The panel approved four consolidation resolutions and moved on to certify the election materials.
Peter MacGregor moved and Lisa Posthumus Lyons seconded a motion to approve the minutes of the commission's September 4, 2025 meeting; the motion carried unanimously. MacGregor then moved, with Lyons seconding, to approve a consolidation resolution for precincts in Ada Township and Grand Rapids Charter Township; that motion carried by unanimous vote. Lyons moved, with MacGregor seconding, to approve a consolidation resolution for precincts in the City of Wyoming and the City of Grandville; that motion also passed unanimously.
After the consolidation votes, Mr. Sullivan reviewed the list of proposals to appear on the May 5 special election ballot. MacGregor moved and Mrs. Posthumus Lyons seconded approval of the proposals list; the motion carried by unanimous vote. Mrs. Lyons provided brief commentary on ballot proofs, and MacGregor moved, with Lyons seconding, to approve the ballots for the May 5 election; the commission approved the ballots unanimously.
No members of the public spoke during the meeting’s public comment period. With no further business, MacGregor moved to adjourn, Judge Avery Rose seconded, and the meeting adjourned at 2:43 P.M.
The commission's approvals set the precinct consolidations, proposals and ballot language for the May 5, 2026 Special Election; election officials will proceed with printing and distribution according to the certified materials.
