Mr. Peterson presented the district’s second 100-day update on social-emotional learning and Tier 2 behavioral interventions. He outlined the three-year goal to refine SEL programming with clear implementation practices and continuous data review, and said the current focus has been on fidelity of Tier 2 interventions.
As an example, Peterson described a Check-In/Check-Out intervention for students struggling with work completion and executive-functioning skills: students meet briefly with a trusted adult in the morning and at the end of the day to set goals and review progress. He said the check-ins are brief—about five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the afternoon—and that typical behavior change can take six to eight weeks.
Peterson said the district will run Panorama screeners March 17–April 17 (with spring break built in) for grades 5–12 to assess social-emotional competencies and school climate perception; he also noted a SAEBRS pilot and other screening efforts to identify students needing supports. He emphasized that interventions require parental consent and staff work to minimize instructional loss.
Board members asked for measurable metrics to monitor program effectiveness; Peterson recommended tracking numbers and percentages of students in Tier 2 and the progression of students to or from Tier 3 supports. He offered to provide further school-level breakdowns to the board.
The board thanked Peterson and requested follow-up information on counts and student-level outcome measures to inform future decisions.
