County staff presented a proposed public workshop to explain how a statewide property‑tax amendment could affect Bradford County finances and to gather public input.
The county manager showed a Florida Association of Counties video and told the board the video was intended to put the measure’s potential local consequences in context. The video warned that replacing property‑tax revenue could force cuts to public safety and infrastructure or require higher sales or other taxes to make up revenue shortfalls.
Staff presented preliminary two‑year estimates of potential revenue loss: roughly $4.6 million in the first year of a phased change and approximately $5.4 million in the second year. Commissioners asked staff to re-run a prior demonstration that allocated lost revenue across departments to show what service cuts or other adjustments would be required.
Commissioners emphasized that the county should share facts with residents without directing how people should vote. The board discussed limited local options for replacing lost property‑tax revenue — for example, some assessments or fees could be adjusted but staff said those sources would raise only portions of the shortfall and that many revenue tools are statutorily constrained.
The board agreed to hold the workshop at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at the Charlie John Center and directed staff to advertise the meeting so it can appear in the local paper this week.
