Oakland’s City Council voted June 8 to approve a slate of routine and capital measures, including contracts for the North Water Main Extension Phase II, the purchase of two park mowers, and a personnel wage adjustment.
The meeting, called to order by Mayor Brant Miller, began with the approval of the agenda and a consent agenda that included May financial claims and routine departmental reports. Council then accepted an insurance proposal from EMC for general property and liability coverage and renewed worker’s compensation with IMWCA; council documents noted the EMC selection represents an estimated annual savings of about $40,000.
Council approved a resolution (2026‑06‑01) authorizing contracts and bonds for the North Water Main Extension Phase II project. The body also approved purchasing two John Deere Z970R ZTrak mowers with "tweels" at $16,585.03 each after determining a lease option would not meet the city's required operating hours.
On personnel matters, the council adopted Resolution 2026‑06‑02 setting employee wages and approved a 5% increase for Virgil Smith Jr., raising his salary to $70,177.93. Mayor Miller nominated Katelyn Biggs and Jordan Sherbondy to the Eckels Memorial Library Board of Trustees; the council confirmed both appointments.
Other actions included approving an application for a $10,000 tree‑planting grant, contributing $1,100 to cover a shortfall for a Fourth of July band, and tabling a disc‑golf item for lack of attendance. Public Works Director Josh Billings reported street work (chip seal on Hurricane Lane, Idlewood Road and Cyclone Street) and sewer repairs are scheduled.
Council members voted unanimously on the recorded motions (3 ayes for each listed motion). The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
The consent agenda included the detailed claims list and May financial totals showing May income of $707,438.30 and expenses of $710,812.86.
