Madison District updates graduation policy to require FAFSA completion or approved opt-out

Administrators reminded trustees that the state provided three years of funding (about $48,000 reported last year) to support FAFSA completion and that the policy requires the district to provide annual FAFSA information and support to students and families. Superintendent Perry and board members described schoolwide efforts — including special events and counseling support — intended to help students complete the application.
Trustees asked whether a lack of parental support could prevent a student from graduating. Administration explained the policy provides protections: exemptions are available when good-faith efforts were made to assist a student, when a student cannot complete FAFSA independently as an adult, or when the student and family choose to opt out. As administration summarized it, "as long as the student is on track to graduate, the student will graduate" even if a parent refuses to sign a waiver.
Following discussion, trustees approved the policy revisions to ensure compliance and to support students accessing postsecondary aid opportunities.
