Cairo board approves event permits, parade closures, hires and wage adjustments; accepts water billing

During its July 17 meeting the Cairo Town Board unanimously approved water billing, allowed the Tour of the Catskills to use the Acra Community Center lawn on Aug. 10, approved parade closures and a solicitation referendum for a Greene County firemen’s convention, and confirmed a slate of summer recreation hires and pay corrections.
The Cairo Town Board on July 17 approved a bundle of routine administrative and event items, including acceptance of water billing, permissions for a bicycle event’s aid station, a referendum restricting sales during a county firemen’s convention, temporary parade parking and road closures, and multiple personnel actions for summer recreation and town staffing.
Key votes and approvals included:
• Resolution No. 2024-144: The board accepted a water billing from the Water Administrator dated July 1, 2024, in the amount of $48,596.25; the motion passed unanimously.
• Resolution No. 2024-145: The board approved the use of the Acra Community Center lawn as a rest/aid station for the Tour of the Catskills noncompetitive ride on Aug. 10, 2024; vote unanimous.
• Resolution No. 2024-148: The board expressed support for the Greene County Historical Society’s application to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) for a Title 9 historic preservation planning grant for the Bronck Museum Master Plan; vote unanimous.
• Resolutions No. 2024-149 and 2024-150: The board approved a referendum barring selling/soliciting along the parade route and at Angelo Canna Town Park from Sept. 2–8, 2024, and authorized no‑parking and partial road closures on Main Street for two parade events (Sept. 6, 3 p.m.–8 p.m.; Sept. 7, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.). Both measures passed unanimously.
• Resolution No. 2024-151: The board approved a 5% retroactive raise for Janet McKeon and Lynn Dittmar (to $20.27 and $16.07 per hour, respectively, retroactive to June 15, 2024) and appointed a list of summer youth counselors with wages between $15.00 and $15.20 per hour (Vickie Smith, James Young, Arden Farnsworth Moore, Connell Deyo, Jayda Johnson, Nancy Karklin, Amanda Dittmar and Catherine Wayman (sub)).
• Resolution No. 2024-152: The board increased Donna Vollmer’s rate for Planning and Zoning Board work to $15.75 per hour retroactive to Jan. 1, 2024.
• Resolution No. 2024-153: The board hired Gary Kern as a part‑time Building Inspector at $20.00 per hour, not to exceed 20 hours per week (except for initial training), effective immediately.
The board also acknowledged a resignation letter from S. Dunn, who resigned as an Emergency Medical Technician — Basic for the Town of Cairo Ambulance effective July 17, 2024, and noted public monthly reports were submitted (ambulance, building/code, tax collector, police, zoning, highway and library) but not discussed during the meeting. All recorded votes were unanimous.
