Louisiana Sea Grant outlines fisheries, youth and disaster-preparedness programs for Plaquemines Parish

Dominique Siebert, the Louisiana Sea Grant agent for Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes, told the council July 9 that her office runs fisheries training, disaster-preparedness outreach and youth environmental education across the parish.
Siebert said the office inspected 61 commercial shrimp vessels this year to ensure proper gear maintenance and offered a free training and leadership cohort for people involved in fisheries. She described a Louisiana Direct program that helps fishermen sell catch directly to consumers and a REELS program that trains charter captains on coastal issues and ecotourism.
On outreach and resilience, Siebert said her office publishes fact sheets and nine videos on topics such as flood insurance, disaster declarations and debris separation; materials are available online and translated into Spanish and Vietnamese. She also described classroom and field programs: aquatic education clinics that reached more than 350 students this year, a Marsh Dog summer program for high-schoolers, and a tree-planting project that engaged local students to plant 250 cypress trees.
Council members welcomed the update and asked for contact information for potential partnerships; Siebert said her cell number is public and encouraged council members and constituents to get in touch.
What’s next: Siebert said applications close Aug. 1 for an upcoming fisheries leadership cohort and invited volunteers for upcoming youth events.
