Hospital board reports May operating loss and announces CEO transition and surgeon schedule

A standing committee report to the Lewis County Board of Legislators summarized recent hospital financials and leadership changes. The hospital reported a May operating loss of $665,000 (compared with a budgeted loss of $296,000 for the month) and a year‑to‑date loss of $2,800,000 (compared with a budgeted year‑to‑date loss of $57,017,000), which a committee member said was impacted by the timing of Intergovernmental Transfer (IGT) payments.
The committee noted a $25,000 endowment match opportunity from the Northern New York Community Foundation: the foundation will match new endowment gifts during the next three years up to $25,000, and the board has received $6,700 toward that match to date.
Officials also announced that orthopedic surgeons from Fort Drum are scheduled to begin performing surgeries in the Surgical Pavilion on Monday, Aug. 3. The committee said Jeff Hellinger will begin working with current executive Mr. Kehrer on July 6 to begin his transition to CEO.
No board votes were recorded on hospital operations during the meeting; the report was informational and included requests to monitor finances and staffing as the transition proceeds.
